SEDONA -- The identity of a body found along the Oak Creek near the Lower Loop Road has been confirmed as that of Amy Davis, the 47-year-old Village of Oak Creek woman, who may have taken her own life.
Dwight D'Evelyn of the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office says the Medical Examiner has determined the cause of death as "asphyxia due to drowning." The body was partially submerged in water. However, the manner of death is undetermined at this time. The YCSO reports no signs of foul play.
A friend alerted the Sheriff's Office that Davis was apparently despondent and asked for a welfare check on the woman. A deputy contacted Davis Thursday, Sept. 12, and while in his presence she spoke with a professional counselor and said she was fine. Then she did not re-contact her friend as promised and disappeared, though deputies found her dog running free during a search.
Sept. 13, an area resident contacted authorities after she found the woman's backpack and a search was concentrated where the backpack was found.
The woman's body was recovered near Oak Creek about a mile south of the backpack find on Thursday, Sept. 19, one week after she disappeared.
