Oversized rig blocks Jerome traffic

ommuters are climbing the hill from Jerome on their way to Prescott, a giant obstacle blocked the road.

A 60-foot tractor trailer had attempted to travel SR 89A from Prescott Valley to Cottonwood. ADOT has on both ends of the mountain pass restricting travel by trucks over 50 feet long. The truck was picking up used cooking oil for recycling as biodiesel fuel. The trucker had already made pickups in Prescott Valley and was headed to Cottonwood.

Bill Volk of Jerome Fire says oversized vehicles are frequent any more, despite the ADOT warning signs. With the tight turns within the town, the trip can be dangerous for motorists and pedestrians.

Jerome charges $175 for an escort for an oversized vehicle or the trucker may pay a $500 fine. They usually opt for the escort.

Article comment by: old jeromie... .

still recall the time a big rig loaded with a few large rolls of steel tried to take the shortcut over the mountain... he got hung up on the corner by the English Kitchen... and proceeded to break his trailer in half or so it seemed. well after that they had to figure out what to do with the large rolls of steel... and they brought is a big rig towtruck... he tried to life a roll and it pulled his front end clear off the ground... i think they had to get 2 of them to do the job...

of course that was many years ago so the details may have gotten fuzzy.

we also used to keep a CB radio handy to listen to the truckers trying to squeeze through the town... that was a 10-4 good buddy...
