Holiday DUI enforcement

The Yavapai Sheriff's DUI Task Force targeted enforcement during the holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve throughout Yavapai County. Funding for a majority of these saturation patrols, which have the goal of reducing the number of DUI involved traffic fatalities and injuries, comes from the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

The Sheriff's Office reported the following for the period:

• 24 injury collisions and 100 total collisions. There were four alcohol related injuries and another four injuries due to speed. Fortunately, there were no fatality accidents during the period.

• The Sheriff's Office tracked 40 DUIs for the 2012 holiday, compared with half that amount for the prior year.

• Of the DUI arrests, 10 were extreme DUIs, with a blood alcohol twice the legal limit. 10 more DUI arrests were logged as felony aggravated DUI.

• 22 of the DUI arrests were due to drugs in the driver's system. The average blood alcohol content during the task force patrol registered .160. Among the stops, only three sober designated drivers were contacted. Two violations were reported for underage drinking.

• Officers made contact with nearly 2,000 vehicles, issuing a total of 452 citations, including 111 for speed, two for red light running and three for seat belts.

Arresting impaired drivers greatly reduces the number of serious or fatal accidents. Remember that YCSO deputies and local police officers are always on the lookout for impaired drivers as they go about their duties.

Citizens can contact the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office with information or questions at 928-771-3260 or the YCSO website: www.ycsoaz.gov
