CAMP VERDE -- The defense for Joseph Montiel has been granted additional time to challenge the Yavapai County Grand Jury indictment.

Montiel is charged with the murder of his estranged wife, Jamie Treakle Montiel, 26, whose body was found in a gulch not far from where Montiel's pickup truck was discovered abandoned off the Cherry Creek Road.

Judge Michael Bluff last week granted the motion of co-defense counsels Rena Glitsos and Robyn Varcoe after oral arguments on Montiel's behalf.

Montiel is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of kidnapping, tampering with a witness, abandoning or concealing a dead body and two counts of interfering with judicial proceedings.

Bluff also scheduled a new case management conference for Jan. 14.

seriously?!?! you can challenge the indictment? its my understanding from the family that there was some sort of confession on his part. it just seems like a waste of our tax dollars. and he has 2 attorneys? i say we should practice like we use to. his insane defense doesnt jive with me. he knew as well as all that knew him what he was about to do. he just didnt think he would ever get caught. i praise those who had the courage to come forward and do the right thing.
