Exploring the history of the Grief Hill Sheep Driveway

The Black Canyon Trial Coalition, along with funding from the Arizona Humanities Council and the National Trust for Historic Preservation is sponsoring two get-togethers this month to explore the history of the Black Canyon and Beaverhead-Grief Trail Sheep Driveway.

The driveway has been used for over a century and is still used by the Auza and Manterola families every year to bring sheep from their winter pastures in the south to summer pastures on the Mogollon Rim.

The objective of the meetings, according to Charles Pregler, is to capture and preserve the history of the driveway and to share it with anyone who is interested.

"We are capturing the history of the Arizona Sheep industry as well," says Pregler. "The idea is to incorporate the information into the interpretation of the Black Canyon National Recreation Trail.

"Whether you are interested in sheep driveways, family heritage in the sheep business or just love sheep, we'd love to have you attend."

The first meeting will be held in the Bobcat Room of the City of Casa Grande Parks and recreation Department, 404 E. Florence Blvd. in Casa Grande on Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The second meeting will be in Black Canyon sity on Oct. 18 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Albins community Center, 19055 E. K-Mine Rd. Contact Kristine Komar at (406) 360-7019.
