Wait a minute: Maybe it's not over, after all

Jon Hutchinson
Staff Reporter

COTTONWOOD -- Even though prospects look monumental for reaching their goal of 488 signatures in a single final week, Cottonwood City Planner Nikki Arbeiter advises that the Verde Santa Fe annexation petition drive is not officially over until the one-year collection period ends. Petitions must be submitted to the county by Oct. 8.

Since the Verde Independent article was published Friday saying that the collection process "had failed," the assistant city planner says she has received phone calls of people saying they are still interested in signing a petition. "Every day we have had people come in to fill one out and the (earlier) article was confusing for people who thought they had until October 8th."

Arbeiter says the city will continue to collect annexation petitions we will collect petitions at the Community Development Department (111 N. Main St.) until Monday, Oct. 8, at noon.

Less Government is far better than more. Let's not add to the spending folks. Cornville should never be annexed into Cottonwood. We don't need the corruption of Cottonwood City Government here. Cottonwood PD has not actually served the people of it's community in at least 20 years that I know of. You walk into the courtroom and I guarantee it will be filled with people charged of a crime with no victim. I'm sorry but that is not justice. When you mention it to someone it gets swept under the rug.
We don't need CPD in Cornville killing people on our streets. If you don't like living in Cornville the solution is to move where you want to be not make all the people who live around you become part of a city they don't want to be part of.

The issue of the Cottonwood Police Patrols at Verde Santa Fe needs to be investigated. We need to know who was at the bottom of that decision.

We in Cootonwood did not ask you to join us. We do not want you and your snobbish, stuck up crowd. You can stay in CORNville and pay higher fees and we will be happy to have your sales tax revenue without having to put up with you.

The number of signatures required for annexation of VSF is much higher than 488. It is closer to 900. It depends on how the parcels are titled: single owner, Joint Tenants With Right Of Survivorship, Joint In Common, Owned in Trust. Right now it is indeterminate unless and until the City of Cottonwood examines each and every parcel form of ownership furnished by the County. Then the " counting method" prescribed by AZ State Statute would have to be applied.

Seriously, this is one reason why most of the people in VSF don't want to be in Cottonwood. You announce in the paper is it over and we take a deep breath and now front page says, What a minute we jumped the gun. If you are over 200 signatures short do you really believe you will get that many more in one week after a year? Most people I talked to have NEVER been approached by this group for anneixation. Let it die already. If you don't know the rules, why would we want to be a part of your City?
