Agua Fria needs volunteers to collect information
The vitality of the Agua Fria National Monument and its value to surrounding communities depends on the availability of water in the Agua Fria River and its tributaries.
The vitality of the Agua Fria National Monument and its value to surrounding communities depends on the availability of water in the Agua Fria River and its tributaries.

On Saturday, June 22, 2013, the Friends of the Agua Fria National Monument and the Upper Agua Fria Watershed Partnership in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will conduct the sixth annual Wet/Dry Mapping event. The Friends are seeking volunteer Leaders to head up hiking teams on segments of the Agua Fria River.

Team Leaders will be receiving training in the weeks prior to this event to promote a safe, fun and productive field experience. They will be responsible for a team of 2-5 volunteers, who will be recruited and trained later in the spring. On Wet Dry Day, the team will record where the river is wet or dry on individual segments of the river. Team Leader volunteers should have experience hiking in desert and rugged terrain; first aid training is a plus. Team Leaders who successfully complete the training and the Wet Dry Mapping project this year will receive a small travel stipend.

The Friends of the Agua Fria National Monument (Friends) are your neighbors and concerned citizens who treasure the Agua Fria National Monument (AFNM) and adjoining public lands and want to be sure that important and sensitive natural and cultural resources are sufficiently protected. The vitality of the Agua Fria National Monument and its value to surrounding communities depends on the availability of water in the Agua Fria River and its tributaries.

For the past five years, the Volunteers recruited through the Upper Agua Fria Watershed Partnership, based at Arcosanti in Mayer and the Friends have joined key staff at the Bureau of Land Management to collect surface water information along the length of the Agua Fria River. Surveying takes place both on and off the Agua Fria National Monument. Citizen Scientists trained in the use of Global Positioning Survey (GPS) have hiked segments of the River and its tributaries marking the presence of surface water in the channels. Over time, this effort is yielding valuable information to address the preservation of water flow in the Agua Fria River Watershed.

Potential Volunteer Team Leaders for the sixth annual Wet/Dry Mapping are asked to contact Steven Brown, FAFNM Administrator at: steven@aguafriafriends.org or call: (928-899-6184).
