U.S. Marshal sees threat in Mexican mafia, not illegal immigration
By Lillian Reid
Arizona State University Special to The Verde Independent

Less than 12 hours after U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent Nicholas Ivie was shot and killed on Oct. 2 outside of Bisbee, Ariz., U.S. Marshal David Gonzales said the Mexican mafia is the biggest threat that Arizonans face on a daily basis.

Ivie's death, the fourth agent in two years, is putting Arizona back in the spotlight for border and immigration issues.

According to Gonzales, attention given to immigration is draining resources that could otherwise be used to address increasingly important issues on the border, such as violence stemming from the Mexican mafia, many of whom are U.S. citizens.

The U.S./Mexico border has been flooded with Border Patrol agents since 2004. In Arizona alone,. the number of agents increased from around 200 to 4,000. This increase in Border Patrol shifted the burden onto the U.S. Marshal's Office and the court system but didn't solve the problem they were trying to address, which was immigration, said Gonzales, who is in favor of comprehensive immigration reform.

The U.S. Marshals Service is responsible for any person who has been charged with a federal crime and is awaiting trial, before being acquitted or convicted in court.

Gonzales, who is the U.S. Marshal for Arizona, said that of the 8,000 prisoners in his care currently, about 80 percent were arrested on some sort of immigration related charge and fall under federal jurisdiction, thus ending up on his plate.

Regardless of the specific charge, tax dollars are paying for these people to be housed, transported, fed and looked after before their trial dates, an amount that adds up to $17 million a month. Another $1 million a month is spent on health care for these individuals, according to Gonzales.

The immigration system needs to be streamlined, Gonzales said on Oct. 2 in downtown Phoenix while talking to journalism students at Arizona State University. "A vast majority of them just want to make a better living for themselves."

"I think guest worker programs should be two to three years and renewable. Because if we make them long term what happens at the end of that long term? They go underground again, right?" said Gonzales. "So, I think a guest worker program is key to a solution."

Gonzales said that through a more comprehensive guest worker program immigrants could get identification cards legitimately and pay taxes on their earnings, which would be beneficial to all parties.

Rick Rodriguez, Carnegie and Southwest Borderlands Initiative professor of journalism at ASU's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, believes that a guest worker program is likely to be a good portion of any comprehensive immigration reform but that the affect it would have on illegal immigration would be difficult to measure.

Guest worker programs such as the Bracero Program that ran from 1942-1964, are wrought with problems, Rodriguez said, and while many immigrants who would otherwise use illegal means to cross into the U.S. would welcome a new guest worker program, it couldn't be a solution in and of itself as 40 to 50 percent of illegal immigrants are people who have overstayed their visas.

"History shows that programs like the Bracero Program have been plagued with all sorts of serious problems. Employers were accused in some of cases of holding workers in near slavery by requiring them to pay exorbitant amounts for housing and requiring them to buy food and supplies at company-owned stores," said Rodriguez via email. "Housing in many cases was very substandard. Some workers complained they were never paid. Already in the current limited guest worker program called the H-2a, there are news reports that recruiters require kickbacks to be paid by workers in Mexico and Central America to get on lists to come to the U.S."

Dr. Lisa Magaña, associate professor at ASU's School of Transborder Studies, believes the U.S. should put more money toward the service aspects of immigration instead of the law enforcement facet.

Illegal immigration is largely just an issue of debate when the country is experiencing slow economic times, Magaña said on the phone. As our concerns about the economy lessen so do our concerns about who is entering this country illegally.

Migrant workers have always contributed to the good of the Country. I don't care if they have papers. Did the black migrants have papers to travel from state to state? This is all crazy. There is work to be done. I don't care who does it as long as it is done and done well.
Wake up America! Our "own" are a bunch of lazy, selfish losers who won't do a day's work for a days' pay. Let's hire folks who WILL work!

I see this laziness everyday and am really tired of it. Whining becuase they can't make 20 bucks an hour. Get rid of the cell phones and all the e-tainment, concentrate on living and get a job.

Let anyone who wants to work...work. The rest can starve.

"If you are legally here in America you should be voting for the TEA PARTY as they slip into the open ranks of both political parties."

Yes, embrace racism/fascism and end this messy constitutional democracy now! By all means, join the Tea Party and surrender your freedom to fanatic ideologues who do NOT believe in democracy.

IF YOU BELIEVE IN THE “RULE OF LAW” YOU WILL STAND BY THE MILLIONS OF AMERICANS, WHETHER YOU ARE A LEGAL LATINO, HISPANIC-AMERICAN, OR ANY OTHER RACE AGAINST THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION CURSE, WHICH IT’S COSTING TAXPAYERS BILLIONS A MASSIVE GROWING PROBLEM AND POLITICIANS MINDLESSLY PANDERING AND BETRAYING ALL OF US.

Join your local TEA PARTY.org is fighting back against the overall corruption in the dominant political parties and elected officials. NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE UNDER THE DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS. HOW MUCH MORE CAN AMERICA TAKE? SKY ROCKETING GAS PRICES, WHEN THIS ADMINISTRATION HAS COMMANDEERED “THE PEOPLE’S LAND, AND ONLY A FEW PERMITS FOR ENERGY COMPANIES TO DRILL FOR OIL, LOCATE NATURAL GAS AND HAVE DECIMATED THE COAL INDUSTRY. THIS NATION COULD BE INDEPENDENT OF COUNTRIES THAT HATE US, AND WE COULD BE SELLING OUR OVER ABUNDANT RESOURCES TO FRIENDLY COUNTRIES THAT ARE HURTING. THE SATURATION OF EPA RULES AND REGULATIONS THAT IS SMOTHERING SMALL BUSINESS CREATIVITY ANY CHANCE OF A NEW TAX REFORM CODE, THAT WOULD ERASE SPECIAL INTERESTS OR THE WEALTHY, BUT FAIRNESS FOR ALL, EQUITY FOR ALL?

TERM LIMITS IN WASHINGTON, SO THE POLITICIANS WILL BE FREE FROM FIGHTING FOR CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS AND THE MONEY FAVORS CORPORATE ENTITIES. WHAT THE TEA PARTY INSISTS ON IS RETURNING MANY RIGHTS TO THE STATES, INSTEAD OF BEING ADMINISTERED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, SUCH AS HEALTH CARE. THE MOST OMINOUS ISSUE OF IS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT GROWING LIKE A DANGEROUS WEED WITHOUT ANY RECOURSE. A MONOLITH THAT IS TAKING OVER EVERYTHING--A TERRIBLE EDUCATION SYSTEM THAT IS FAILING, A TAKEOVER OF THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM, THE DISMANTLING OF OUR ENERGY RESOURCES AND THE THREAT TO OUR LIBERTIES AND SAFETY FROM ENEMIES ABROAD.

Obviously the 47 percent mainstream Liberal-Communist-Marxist progressives will provide the ammunition to attack Romney, but they will stay quite about the pandering to the "Freeloaders" the scroungers and those parasites and illegal aliens who live off the rest of us. Not forgetting that many in the percentage are the infirm and handicapped that needs a helping hand.

The children of illegal aliens for years have played the price, as they were young children without status when brought here by criminal parents? Today there has been a remedy for them through President Obama’s executive preference, although it should have been voted on in the Congress. This inconceivable problem will never go away and will indeed get far worse unless Congress enacts the BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP BILL. It is highly controversial and unless an amendment is forthcoming, the state treasuries will be forever drained. Pregnant mothers coming here with the deliberate plan to have their child on welfare and the hundreds of Billions of dollars extracted by inept federal laws of that says children born here automatically receive citizenship. The illegal alien parent is feeding from the welfare trough, without ever paying a cent into the fund. This can only escalate further as President Obama is encouraging illegal immigrants and migrants to come, by delivering free food stamps without any restrictions. Just look at California, THE SANCTUARY CITY STATE" Where Los Angeles city Administrator gave out the latest payout of the children of illegal alien parents. Two months and a hundred sixty million dollars later and now Los Angeles is pushing for another tax hike. This is incredulous-to let our lousy, incompetent federal government pay for all these illegal aliens in this border state. NO WONDER CALIFORNIA IS IN A DOWNWARD FISCAL SLIDE?

Only the enactment to this amendment can stop this problem by making it official that only the children of at least one parent being a U.S. citizen. Also waiting for a vote in the House is mandatory E-verify “THE LEGAL WORKFORCE ACT” law to halt illegal aliens taking citizens and lawful resident’s jobs. Why this law sit’s dormant stands to show how many the politicians care about the legal workers, although this law has been carefully hidden from site by none other than Democrat majority leader Harry Reid. Why with 8.1 percent of Americans are jobless, why either the House or Senate refuses to bringing either of these laws to the floor.

Many states have no significant enforcement of Voter laws, specifically those governed at state level by Democrats? States that are closest to the border region will be heavily compromised by non-citizens voting in election cycle. Lacking any true overseeing of voter fraud, such as people voting in two states, illegal aliens-intentionally or not-voting or even absentee ballots easily altered, we hope that the impartial people such as the TEA PARTY or other unbiased organizations can check all and every discrepancy immediately or after the general, state and local elections. FLORIDA--will be watched carefully for irregularities by many groups including TEA PARTY members in the voting, with criminal violators being slapped with a felony.

If you are legally here in America you should be voting for the TEA PARTY as they slip into the open ranks of both political parties. It don't matter where you came from, your skin color, you are just as threatened by the party of Obama and his Czars, who will destroy the American dream. Blacks, whites, Hispanic or any other bloc of citizens who will eventually suffer from job loss, sovereignty rights and the freedoms that being an American is all about. Hundreds of thousands have by now read the strange circumstances around President Obama's birth, but very few if any politicians have had the backbone to talk about it. The TEA PARTY.ORG has the facts and insurmountable evidence, that something is seriously wrong. I have never been one for conspiracy theories, but this one takes the cake. One very suspicious question to answer is, how can Obama have registered for Indonesian schooling, when they only accept proof of citizenship for people born there? Alice in the Lewis Carroll book "Alice in Wonderland: More and more curious or stranger and stranger! As the saying goes?

A new revelation that has been urgently spotlighted is the effects of immigration and the constant need for portable water. A new report has been released by (FAIR) The Federation of Immigration Reform, that America cannot sustain its need for fresh water. Population has exploded from between 1970 and 2010, U.S. population increased by more than 50 percent, from 203 million to 309 million, driven by a massive wave of immigration. This is great for the creation of businesses, but bad for consumers who are already suffering from clogged highways, crumbling infrastructure, and loss of farmland as it is being developed continually for more apartments and housing. Our water supplies are not plentiful and you very rarely hear about the court battles over water. If Obama wins in November he has promised to pass immigration amnesty for the 20 million plus illegal aliens, which not only will there be fraudulent applications as it was in 1986. Another amnesty of this proportion will bring into the country through CHAIN MIGRATION even millions of more immigrants who have been sponsored by family members. Commerce and industry doesn’t care as its more profits and cheaper hiring.

Something strange has suddenly materialized to do with investigations about the Obama family in Kenya. Rather than me trying to describe the this rather unnerving details you must take a few minutes and check out the connection relating to Islamic “Shariah” law—Obama-and the family? Read it at TEA PARTY.ORG, as it scared the wits out of me.

The TEA PARTY mission is to bring awareness to any issue which challenges the Security, Sovereignty or Domestic Tranquility of our beloved nation. Learn the facts and evidence of President Obama and his ultra Socialist agenda at TEA PARTY.ORG.

A new Bracero Program, if properly administered might be the way to go.

Unfortunately, farmers in this country can't get enough people to pick their crops. Right now the Washington State apple farmers have a shortage of pickers. Even with 15% higher wages they can't attract people.

From a recent NPR report:
"Broetje (the farmer) is building its own rental apartments in town and advertising for pickers as far away as Arizona and Ohio. The fastest workers can earn about $1,000 per week."

But even at good wages like that, he can't induce "USA born and raised" people to do the kind of hard work involved in picking apples. So what you going to do? How do those crops get picked?

And remember, Braceros workers would have to pay taxes too. Right now, a lot of the money paid out to illegal immigrants probably goes under the table.

Paying 18 million a month to hold illegal migrant workers that could be picking crops that are going to waste seems kind of dumb.

A Braceros Program might help both the illegal worker and the farmer and save the US taxpayer a lot of money.
