4/16/2013 2:11:00 PM Explosive device found in woods near Forest Lakes
FOREST LAKES - U.S. Forest Service workers were conducting a survey Monday for an upcoming project in the area of Forest Service Road 237 when they found what turned out to be an explosive device.
FR 237 is north of Highway 260, west of Forest Lakes on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. About noon, the employees identified a suspicious object near some trees and contacted the area's Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer. The object was later determined to be an un-detonated handmade explosive device with a metal "pipe bomb" design.
FR 237 was closed for almost six hours while Coconino County Sheriff's deputies and U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement investigated the scene. Bomb technicians from the Flagstaff Police Department were dispatched. Once the device no longer posed a threat of detonating, the scene was processed by deputies, USFS Law Enforcement, and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).
The area surrounding the device also was searched for any other devices but none were found and the area was reopened. This investigation is ongoing and the Sheriff's Office asks that anyone with information about recent suspicious activity in this area or information regarding the discovered explosive device contact the Coconino County Sheriff's Office at 928-774-4523.
