PRESCOTT - The Yavapai County Board of Supervisors appointed a new director of Flood Control Monday.

Dan Cherry took over for former director Charlie Cave, effective Feb. 3, county Administrator Phil Bourdon said. Cave retired Feb. 1 after 14 years of service to the county.

Cherry's annual salary will be $89,445 Bourdon said.

Cherry is a Project Engineer in the Public Works Department. He has worked with the county for 17 years in various positions within both the Public Works Department and the Flood Control District, according to Bourdon.

"Retired director Charlie Cave provided encouragement to me to welcome the opportunity of this new role," Cherry said. "I have been fortunate that most of the existing staff in the district office are familiar with me and have been supportive of this transition."

Cherry has an education and background based in the fields of hydrology and drainage design.

Cherry said he is looking forward to the opportunity to work with local, state, and federal employees on floodplain management for the county.

"One of the new challenges that the Flood Control District faces is to improve its coordination between various local, state and federal agencies during times of crisis," Cherry said. "Climate change on a global scale is having a direct effect on the severity of storms, as well as drought, extreme heat, and thusly wild fires. Fostering and maintaining a close relationship with all involved emergency-related agencies will help bolster the safety of the citizens of Yavapai County."
