Local artists have joined Verde Valley Medical Center to promote breast cancer awareness and raise money for the Cancer Centers of Northern Arizona Healthcare Sedona Campus through the Arty Bra project.

Select artists produced Arty Bras to be auctioned during the Thunder Valley Rally in Old Town Cottonwood Sept. 20-21. A third artist also donated an image to raise money for the cause. Thunder Valley Rally is an annual event put on by the city of Cottonwood.

The bras and picture will be auctioned off live prior to each night's headliner taking the stage, approximately 8:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

The bras were produced by an artist team from Gallery 527 in Jerome and Gail Benedict. Artist Alan Smith donated the print.

Bras created by community members and those from Arty Bra workshops held throughout the community will be on display inside Old Town shops.

Gallery 527

Photographer and gallery owner Donna Chesler organized a group of women artists from the gallery to collaborate on a bra together. The result includes a serpent slithering down the front and feminine chains hanging from the back. Jewelry artist Marian Ward, sculptor Mary Phoenix and painter Ardis Harsche worked together to create the one-of-a-kind masterpiece, fitting for any women riding a motorcycle.

Ward lives in Sedona and creates jewelry using a range of precious metals including gold, fine silver, sterling and copper. Phoenix, also of Sedona, currently creates mostly in clay and produces a line of mission crosses and shields. Harsche, inspired by Paleolithic artists, applies charcoal, dry earth pigments and beeswax medium to oil paint to create texture in her pieces.

Gail Benedict

Benedict is a self-taught artist who has been creating pieces for more than 20 years. She makes pieces using mosaic, mixed media and altered books. She used her colorful creation background to create a bronze bra that will be auctioned.

Alan Smith

Self-taught oil painter Smith has been creating photo-like images for more than 40 years. He donated a desert landscape piece, complete with saguaro cacti, to be auctioned off to raise money for the Cancer Centers.

Cancer Centers of Northern Arizona Healthcare and Verde Valley Medical Center are part of Northern Arizona Healthcare, which also provides services through Flagstaff Medical Center, Verde Valley Medical Clinic and Heart & Vascular Center of Northern Arizona.

Article comment by: So you hate people with breast's and prostates ?

At least you cover all the bases.

If offending your puritanical ways saves a life then so be it.

Your delicate sensibilities are worth less than a human life.

Don't attend the event it's not like you have to go right?

Unless you really neeeeeeed to find a reason to be offended?

We love the way the city is embracing it's new bad image.

Bad is the new good!

I don't know about you, but showing off women's undergarments with snakes coming out of them is something I want my children to see right now!

We need more of this kind of thing. Family friendly values is just so 2012. Boring!

And why stop with arty bras? We're sure the city doesn't want to be against prostate cancer awareness, so let's have arty jock straps! I can't wait to see what will be coming out of those!

These kinds of values is why the people have so much confidence in Cottonwood's leadership. We love being bad!

So come to Cottonwood, where we're not really sociopaths.

It just seems that way!

Article comment by: Winning Combo wants ~more~ breast cancer! -less help for victims? really?

Amazing that your personal distaste for a couple folks in the city, or the city itself, colors your vision of otherwise positive events.

You would prefer the valley be a lifeless and dusty bin of nothing rather than alive and vibrant with commerce and fundraising?

You yearn for less funding for cancer even?

Glad we don't share your outlook on life and proud of the city for thriving despite the continuous barbs from a vocal minority of haters.

So now to booze, bikers, and bootlegging ...

... we can add bras and babes to Cottonwood's exciting new identity!

Thanks Mayor Joens and City Manager Bartosh!
