A vehicle fire on the Interstate spread to the adjacent wild land near the Sedona Interchange last Thursday. Fire crews were dispatched from Montezuma-Rimrock Fire District. The vehicle was found in the median and fully engulfed. Fire had also spread into adjacent vegetation with less than an acre burning. The car fire was quickly extinguished with an attack line. Remaining crews were assigned to controlling the wild-land fire. DPS provided traffic control and initial attempts to control the fire before crews arrived.
During fire operations, traffic was reduced to one lane on the northbound side.
The fire appears to have started when the driver of the vehicle was forced into the median to avoid another vehicle. The vehicle came to rest in a brushy area that was quickly ignited by the exhaust system.
