Saturday was free Family Day at the Verde Valley Birding & Nature Festival, held at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood. Boy Scouts from Troop 7020 (right) planted the annual festival tree, an Arizona Gray Ash, at the event site as part of the festivities. The theme of the festival this year was "Finches and Flowers," focusing on backyards as habitats for great bird watching. There were plenty of exhibits for adults and kids that explored how to attract birds and butterflies by creating a welcoming environment. The weeklong festival grows in popularity each year and attracts an international following of bird watching enthusiasts. Birdyverde.org is the website associated with the festival.
