CAMP VERDE - Since 2007, The Jacob Teague Memorial Foundation has sponsored a softball game in Cottonwood to raise money to help Verde Valley law enforcement agencies afford K-9 officers. On May 18 at 7 a.m., the foundation will hold its first 5K Run/Walk at Butler Park in Camp Verde.

The foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was established in 2005 to honor Jacob "Jake" Teague, an officer with the Camp Verde Marshal's Office who was killed in 2004 by an impaired driver. The family wanted a way to remember Jake as a son and brother who served his community with honor, according to a statement from the foundation.

"We also wanted a way for his fellow officers to remember him, even the ones who didn't know him," says Amber Teague, Jacob's sister.

Teague, who also serves as president of the foundation, says she wanted to find additional ways to help fund the local K-9 units. Though she still considers the annual softball tournament the foundation's "big event," she is hopeful that the run will be a success.

"We've been seeing more runs lately," Teague says. "We wanted to do something simple. So we felt it was something we could put on. If it works, we can do it again."

Though she is hopeful that the 5K run/walk can become an annual event, the softball tournament holds a special place in Amber's heart.

"Friends, family, we all played softball together," Amber says. "It was kind of fitting that we do a softball tournament."

Participants will begin the run near the football field at Butler Park and will finish at the Ramada on Main Street.

Registration for the run costs $25 and includes a T-shirt. For more information, contact The Jacob Teague Memorial Foundation at (928) 567-2294 or email: jacobteaguemem@aol.com.
