Scores audition for Piano Guild

More than 30 students, of varying ages and ability levels, played in the Piano Guild Auditions, last Friday and Saturday, April 19-20 in Cottonwood. Caroline Riggins, a member of the National Piano Guild Hall of Fame, traveled from Tempe to judge all the students this year. She has been a private Piano Teacher since 1965, and has judged for the Guild and the Federation of Music Clubs in many different communities.

The Piano Guild Auditions are not competitive, rather, all participants simply strive to prepare and present the required musical elements to the best of their ability. The students learned scales and chords and at least 2 pieces to play for Mrs. Riggins, who then evaluated, encouraged, and commented in writing on their performances. Most students memorized their selections. Those who participated are considered members of the National Fraternity of Student Musicians for the next year. Some of those who continue to progress well in their musical endeavors may be eligible for scholarships from the Piano Guild, thus helping to further their musical experiences and education.

Six piano teachers are members of the American College of Musicians, and prepared students to participate in the Verde Valley Piano Guild. They are: Judy Torigoe, Village of Oak Creek; Victoria Harris, Payson; Beverly Hall, Barbara Osher, Madeline Shires, and Brittany Smith, all of Cottonwood. Special thanks go to Beverly Hall, who hosts this worthwhile musical event annually for beginning to advanced piano students, in her home/studio in Cottonwood.
