CORDES JUNCTION -- A Tucson couple spent Valentine's Day in jail after they were pulled over and arrested on Interstate-17 north of Cordes Junction.

The YCSO K9 deputy stopped a silver passenger car with Utah plates traveling north. Deputies said the driver made several moving violations such as following other vehicles too closely.

Armando Padilla, 38, was driving with 39-year-old passenger Caroline Pond, both from Tucson.

While talking about the traffic stop, the deputy became suspicious the vehicle may be carrying illegal drugs. The officer was given permission to conduct a search of the car.

In the trunk of the Mercury Grand Marquis, the deputy found numerous concealed packages which appeared to contain cocaine. The contents of each package was examined. The officer determined there was 38 pounds of cocaine and five pounds of methamphetamine. The total wholesale value of this drug load is estimated in excess of $860,000 with the street value estimated at three times that amount.

The vehicle was registered to Pond. Detectives continue to investigate issues regarding the drug's source and destination.

Padilla and Pond were arrested and charged with transportation of dangerous drugs for sale.

at the Camp Verde jail and are held on a $150,000 bond.
