2/9/2010 5:10:00 PM Camp Verde man charged with assaulting wife
CAMP VERDE - A Camp Verde woman was allegedly shot in the back by her husband, who then got into a physical altercation with responding deputies.
Feb. 4, Camp Verde Marshal's deputies were called to a domestic violence incident at a home on Finnie Flats Road. When officers arrived, the victim, a 33-year-old woman, was a few yards away from the residence. Deputies learned that she and her husband Marco Lozanilla-Sorrano, 38, were going through a divorce, and that he had just used a handmade to shoot her in the back. The weapon is made of metal and fires a .22 caliber round.
The impact of the round fired was not great enough to penetrate the woman's clothing. She told police she was concerned for the welfare of her five children, who were still in the house. The children range in age from 8 to 16.
Sgt. Brian Andrews yelled at Marco in English and Spanish to put his hands in the air, according to the report, but the man refused. Marco also allegedly ignored commands to even display his hands and kneel. Deputies learned that Marco's 15-year-old son had already taken away the weapon.
When Marco began to approach the officers without being instructed to do so, Sgt. Andrews grabbed him by the shirt as he approached. According to the report, Marco then grabbed Andrews by the neck in an attempt to fight. The officer and suspect went to the ground, where Marco allegedly kept resisting. He was finally restrained when more officers arrived.
The remaining children at the residence were not uninjured, and the weapon was seized. The bullet and casing were recovered.
Marco Lozanilla-Sorrano was charged with resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a person under 15, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon or instrument, aggravated assault on police and attempted first-degree murder.
