CLARKDALE -- A van drove off the highway in Clarkdale just after 6 p.m. Sunday. One woman was killed in the accident.

Clarkdale Fire crews, Clarkdale Police and Cottonwood fire crews were called to Turquoise Way, the access road to the hilltop Panorama subdivision and the site of the crash.

They found a 2005 Dodge Caravan minivan had slammed into a culvert on the right hand side of the southbound lane. Witnesses said the vehicle was being driven north at about 35mph, in a 50 mph zone, when the driver suddenly crossed the centerline, into the southbound lane and crashed into the culvert.

The van was driven by 68-year-old Paul Merwin of Camp Verde. Merwin was transported to the Verde Valley Medical Center. He was treated for his injuries and released early Monday morning.

His passenger was not so lucky; 64-year-old Melody Winters of Cottonwood was also taken to the Cottonwood hospital, but succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation by the Clarkdale Police Department and charges have not been filed at this time.

Article comment by: sorry to the family

Sorry to hear the loss and my prayers to the family. I think having pictures like this is hard for the family to see. I lost my mother to a accident and the newspapers printed the photo in the papers. It's hard enough for families and even harder for them to see the photos. Again, dearly sorry for the loss.

The article neglects to mention that the people first on scene, who were 2 vehicles behind the van when the accident occurred were from the Jerome Volunteer Fire Department.
