Letter: Future of Cottonwood Dog Park

Editor:

Everyone in the city of Cottonwood should seek the opportunity to attend a Cottonwood City Council meeting and/or one of their work sessions especially if their decisions will affect them in a positive or negative manner. These sessions are your chance to speak and express your views not be negative and confrontational. The City Council has a tough decision to make concerning the Cottonwood Dog Park.

Do they vote to move it to one of three options -- near Mingus Ave, North Clear Zone of the Cottonwood Airport, or adjacent to Black Hills Auto Body? Let’s do a little comparison shall we. The existing park has approximately 20 houses near it and a RV Trailer Park where most of the residents are temporary but all three of the proposed options listed above have 527 houses in one area (Cottonwood Ranch), 125 possible houses in another (Mesquite Hills), houses on Airpark Road and let’s not forget the houses on and around Black Hills Drive.

It is not a matter of do not build it my back yard because we already have the Adopt for Life Center (Humane Society) and the city airport. So please don’t tell us about noise.

Do they vote to leave it at the existing location? The cost of the existing park was quoted as $35,000 four years ago and the article of Friday

Aug. 17, wants everyone to believe relocation cost would only be $15,000. The largest figure missing is labor and as the article stated the grass, plumbing, trees. What about the fund-raising by volunteers, free manpower, tree donors, etc. Are they going to be willing to do it all over again?

So be realistic and estimate relocation cost at $35,000-45,000 or more. Can the city of Cottonwood afford that or will the taxpayers be on the hook? The park is a beautiful park, well established with a lot of hard work put into it. Cottonwood City Council should consider erecting a sound barrier wall to preserve the existing park as suggested by Councilman Terence Prat.

What will be on the next Cottonwood Council agenda – moving the Little League Ball Park?
