100 Candles: Virginia Couitt

Virginia Couitt celebrated her 100th birthday with many family and friends on July 20. Born in Martha’s Vineyard of Portuguese immigrant parents on July 20th, 1912, Virginia Mello was the youngest daughter of 13 children.  Virginia was raised in Massachusetts on the family farm where they raised their own food.  Every day Virginia helped her family with the ∏ acre garden and helped with the live stock including the butchering and making sausage. Even after marriage, Virginia continued to help her parents with the canning of meats, vegetables, and fruits.  Virginia’s commitment to her family will long be remembered.

On June 10th, 1940 Virginia married John Couitt and soon two beautiful baby girls followed, Carol and four years later Elizabeth (Betty).  The girls have fond memories of the family farm and growing up in Massachusetts.  In 1958 John and Virginia packed the family up and moved to Phoenix Arizona where John was a successful gardening entrepreneur for over 30 years.

Virginia loved sewing and cooking including a traditional Portuguese Sweet Bread and Kale soup being favorites of the family.  Virginia continued to make bread weekly into her early 90’s.

John as been gone from Virginia’s side for four years now, but she has her two beautiful daughters and son’s in law, five grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren to keep her company these days.
