Letter: Save your life

Editor:

Tim died on Aug. 27, 2011, at the young age of 42. He died of a cancer that is nearly 100-percent curable – if caught in time. On Aug. 1, 2 and 3 (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) the non-profit Prostate-Onsite-Project (POP) mobile van will be visiting the Verde Valley. The POP organization was founded to help men prevent themselves and their families from going through what Tim’s family – parents, siblings, wife, new-born twins – are going through.

One in six men gets prostate cancer. Those with a family history of prostate or breast cancer being most exposed. In older men, it usually grows slowly. In younger men it is deadly, feasting on the higher testosterone levels of youth. The PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test is the only, albeit not perfect, tool available to detect prostate cancer.

The POP van, with a Board Certified Urologist, will be in Camp Verde, Cottonwood and Sedona respectively. POP accepts insurance, but if you have none they will do the exam for a low $72.

For the sake of those you love, I urge you young men to call 480-964-3013 or 1-800-828-6139 to participate. It is a tragedy for any man to die from such a highly treatable and curable disease.
