Verde Valley Majors All Stars update

Chris Mathe VVN/Sean Morris

The Verde Valley Majors All Star baseball team won their first game of the state tournament in Tucson, 15-13, against Yuma Wednesday.

Verde Valley came back from a 7-3 deficit to force extra innings against Yuma, and they did it again the following day against Tucson. Gus Henley hit a three-run homer and Chris Mathe hit a two-run dinger to tie the game 8-8 in regulation Thursday.

The second game started 30 minutes late and the lights turned off in the middle of the seventh inning. They'll pick up where they left off today at 5:30 p.m.

Tucson scored four runs to start the seventh, so they're up 12-8 with two runners on base and two outs. Verde Valley will have to score at least four in the bottom of the seventh to stay in the winners' bracket and play next on Saturday. If they lose they'll play at 8 p.m. tonight.

More updates to follow when available and a comprehensive story when the tournament ends.

UPDATE: The second game finally picked back up Friday after a rain delay, but Verde Valley was unable to score and lost 12-8. The game scheduled after that against District 11's Pinal Mountain was postponed until Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Mitchel Lindsey started for VV against Pinal and Chris Mathe closed.

Verde Valley found themselves down once again, but clawed back and exploded in the sixth inning to win big, 17-9.

Tyler Kelly hit two home runs. Ben Grandy, Matt Bachler, and Jake Schwisow also hit home runs as Verde Valley advanced in the state tournament.

They play Monday at 5:30 p.m. against McCormick Ranch.
