Letter: At least she can go to Canada when she gets sick
7/14/2012 1:15:00 PM
The title of the Forbes article says it all: “Koch Brothers Financed ‘Research’ Institute Steps Up Misleading Obamacare Attacks.”
Susan Pipes, the source for the recent guest commentary, is a Canadian working for the Pacific Research Institute, another stealth PAC flying under the radar as a “think tank” doing “policy research.”
This year, alone, they received $360,000 from the Koch brothers, those 21st Century Borgias who utilize any-and-all means necessary to increase their staggering mountain of wealth and expand their global influence. Pledging nearly half-a-billion dollars to defeat Obama, they have yet to be investigated for building a methanol plant in post-sanctions Iran.
Mitt Romney just had a fundraiser, hosted by David Koch at his Long Island Hamptons estate; $50,000 a head (couples got a $25,000 discount). Bentleys and Mercedes were parked outside. No Chevys, Toyotas or (God forbid) Hyundais.
PRI, based in San Francisco, has a long list of corporate donors -- PhRMA, Pfizer, Exxon Mobile, to list a few -- and has carried water for Philip Morris (a tobacco company). They tried (unsuccessfully) to overturn California’s clean air regulations, and are currently suing the Feds to prevent the listing of polar bears as an endangered species, attacking global warming as a hoax.
In addition, they have lobbied for privatizing water distribution, with the establishment of “water markets.” In short, corporations making you pay the going rate for a glass of water. Now, there’s a health issue.
Susan Pipes has been accused of “cherry-picking” data to support her arguments, skewing the conclusions of the Deloitte study, for example, which based its findings on a paltry 501 responses out of 16,537 physicians queried. She conveniently overlooked one figure in the study: 44 percent of doctors believe the Affordable Care Act is a step in the right direction.
Of course, when she gets sick, she can always return to her native Canada to receive care.
