VOC - Russell Dunn and Karen McClelland visited the Red Rock Ranger District Visitor's Center with their household of snakes. Visitors Center Supervisor Nina Hubbard says Dunn and McClelland of Red Rock Reptiles is one of the most popular living displays. They show their rattlers, king and gopher snakes, moths and beetles four times a year, during the most popular visitation days.
Dunn says the only threatening snakes in this area are the various rattlesnakes, which give fair warning that they are nearby. Dunn says if you are walking and hear a rattling, stop first and locate the snake. He suggests carrying a walking stick or similar on a hike to move a snake off a trail, if necessary. The rattlesnake also has a head wider than its body.
The other dangerous snake found in Arizona is the coral snake found in Southern Arizona, easily confused with a king snake. The difference is where the red, yellow, and black stripes converge. A common lyric should keep you out of trouble, "red meets black, venom lack; red meets yellow, kill a fellow." Coral snakes are a type of snake that only eats other snakes.
Kingsnakes of a variety of colors also eat other snakes, including rattlesnakes.
All other Arizona snakes are not harmful and even beneficial. Snakes control numbers of rodents and other pests.
Dunn also has a varied collection of moths and beetles found in Arizona.
Dunn and McClelland return to the Ranger Station Visitors Center the weekend of Aug. 25 and 26. Hubbard says at that time, the displays at the visitor center should be updated and refreshed.
