COTTONWOOD -- A 20-year-old driver fled from a Cottonwood police officer as the officer was trying to make a traffic stop for a broken tail light at 1:30 Saturday morning. The car, a green Acura, was weaving and had slowed to 5 mph in a 35 mph zone.
As the officer turned on his overhead lights, the Acura sped away, cutting through a vacant lot, then sliding in dirt, narrowly missing an SUV.
The car came out of the dirt onto asphalt on 15th Street, and again, slid 106-feet, striking a parked silver Mustang. The impact pushed the Ford 27 feet before it stopped.
The Acura attempted a turn onto Mingus Avenue, but lost control, sliding into and destroying a front yard fence.
The car stopped beneath a tree, the driver bailed and fled on foot, and the suspect and officer went through a wooden fence.
When cornered, the suspect assumed a fighting position and the officer tore his pants and suffered abrasions bringing him into custody
Elmer Fabian Lomeli of Cottonwood, was arrested, charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, unlawful use of transportation, three counts of aggravated DUI with a suspended license, two counts of aggravated criminal damage, three counts of criminal damage, two counts of hit and run, reckless driving, minor in consumption and resisting arrest.
