Letter: Free citizens must protect themselves

I am a registered Independent but usually vote Republican for only reason, the second amendment to the Constitution.

I believe the right to protect one’s self, family and property is a natural right, not something a government can give to you or take away from you. Republicans as a whole have stood up for the second amendment. Our current president and his appointees have on many occasions shown that they do not believe the second amendment gives individuals the right to own a gun.

Eric Holder, the attorney general, has stated as much. President Obama has agreed with the United Nations ban on guns and will be pushing hard for it if given a second term.

Police protection is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves. Police do not protect you from crime, they show up after it happens and investigate.

A little gun history: 1929 Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953 20 million unarmed dissidents were exterminated. 1911, Turkey-gun control 1915 to 1917 1.5 million Armenians exterminated. Germany gun control 1938, 1939 to 1945 13 million Jews and others exterminated. China fun control 1935, 1948 to 1952 20 million political dissidents rounded up and exterminated. Guatemala gun control 1964, 1964 to 1981 100,000 Mayan Indians exterminated. Cambodia gun control 1956, 1975 to 1977 one million educated people exterminated.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control, 56 Million. When a population is free to have arms they are citizens, when they are not they are subjects.

During this political season, the economy, immigration, taxation and so on are important, but without the right to protect one’s family and self and the means to do it with, nothing else much matters.
