This week at JCSVV
6/14/2012 1:05:00 PM
Shalom from the Jewish Community of Sedona and the Verde Valley. Erev Shabbat services on Friday, June 15, begin at 7:30 p.m., led by Rabbi Alicia Magal. Usher in the Sabbath with song, prayers, and poetic readings.
This is Simcha Shabbat, when we offer a special blessing to all those celebrating a Simcha (happy occasion) such as a birthday or anniversary during the month. Helen King and Sherry Lambly are sponsoring the Oneg refreshments in honor of Helen’s welcome celebration as Helen takes on her Hebrew name of Ariela and is honored with an aliyah to the Torah.
Saturday, June 16, Torah study and discussion led by Rabbi Magal begins at 11 a.m.
The Torah portion for this week is Shalach Lecha (Numbers 13:1 - 15:41) in which scouts are sent through the land of Canaan and return to give their report to the Israelites in the wilderness. All but two of the twelve scouts lacked faith and confidence, with the result that the Children of Israel would continue to wander for the remainder of forty years in the desert before entering the Promised Land. The second topic for our study of later biblical books will be a continuation of our exploration of II Samuel, regarding the intriguing and dramatic life and legacy of King David. His repentance at his sins and failings served as the subject for some of the Psalms attributed to him. His message rings out as a powerful message to us still today. Potluck luncheon follows the study session.
A synagogue-sponsored Bereavement Group will continue on Tuesday, June 19, with the third of 4 weekly sessions at a private home. Call office for information and registration.
Wednesday, June 20, 8:30 a.m. Egalitarian morning minyan for a midweek spiritual lift. At 7 p.m. Rabbi Levertov’s educational series meets for study of the mystical qualities of the Aleph-Bet (Hebrew alphabet) and Torah portion of the week.
The JCSVV is a warm, welcoming, egalitarian congregation, unaffiliated with a particular stream of Judaism.
The synagogue is located at 100 Meadowlark Drive, off Hwy 179 just south of the Chapel Road roundabout. Call (928) 204-1286 or visit www.jcsvv.org
