My Turn: Great teachers come from all areas of life

My Turn

Teachers come in many forms -- friends, siblings, parents, one's children or spouse, schoolteachers, sports coaches ... life. I certainly have learned from all of the above.

What I find is, that to pick "the one" who has been the most influential is an impossible task. Because, as each teacher is different, so has their impact on my life been. I can feel each teacher's influence throughout my day as I face different challenges.

When I find I am striving for excellence in the details, I feel the influence of Mr. Fitzgerald, my high school band director. His ability to help us to critique ourselves in order to use that as a tool for performing with excellence really stuck with me.

His instruction helped me to become the number one trombone player in the entire state, affording me full scholarships to whichever college I chose.

When I need the tools to be organized and ready to "captain" the ship that is our Tae Kwon Do organization, I remember Dr. Silvester's lessons. He was my college band director.

He had this knack for making any huge task seem small and manageable. As his Graduate Assistant, he involved me in a major way in so many amazing events; we even partnered up in organizing youth music tours to Europe every summer.

Family has also had a huge impact on my life. When I need guidance and feedback, I look to the smartest man I know, my husband. He has taught me so much about life and how to be successful in the world. When I'm feeling I need to find a centered path emotionally, I look to the most heartfelt teacher I know, his Mom. When I need the lesson that keeps me young and in touch with the world, my children are happy to oblige.

While they've all taught me different things, my influential teachers have given me the same gift in common though -- the gift of feeling supported and inspired. It's my hope that students, and all people, be afforded that, because that's all anyone really needs to find success.

Karen Conover is the Owner/Head Instructor of KC's Family Tae Kwon Do in Cottonwood and Camp Verde. She is a 3rd Degree Black Belt and is a former High School Band Director, holding a Master's Degree in Music.
