The Mingus softball and baseball teams host the Camp Verde Cowboys Monday, April 9, 2012. Mingus softball won 16-1, and Mingus baseball won 2-0. The Marauders swept Verde Valley teams in both sports this year.
COTTONWOOD - The Marauders softball team finished a season sweep of Camp Verde at home Monday, winning 16-1. Mingus won every game against Verde Valley opponents by at least 10 runs this season.
Since losing a close one to Payson a few weeks ago, Mingus mercy ruled opponents in five straight games. Angelina Saucedo is dealing from the circle, and Marauders are swinging bats with purpose.
Saucedo has a 2.2 ERA on the season with 79 strikeouts. In her last four games she's averaged 9.25 strikeouts per game. She's really pitching well, and she's got a lot of run support.
Senior catcher Cassie Norman tied Tessa Fanning in the school record for home runs in a season Monday (9). A no doubter, and as Cassie Norman rounded second base she celebrated like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. Her excited teammates congratulated her at the plate, proud to witness a part of Mingus softball history.
Later in the inning, Cassie's sister Catelyn Norman set up to bunt, but the runners advanced from a passed ball. Catelyn was given the green light to swing away and she sent one over the fence too.
Cassie Norman has power and balance at the plate, but her teammates have great power too. That gives her protection in the lineup. When teams decide to intentionally walk Cassie, other Marauder hitters will be there with quality at bats and hits to drive in runs.
Cassie Norman has six games to own the school home run record.
Certainly Cassie Norman wants to get the record setting in front of a home crowd, so the best possible scenario is she hits one over the fence against rival Flagstaff Thursday at home. Be there.
