COTTONWOOD -- A combination of forces brought the Arizona Culture Challenge to Cottonwood in April. Today, the fruits of that weekend experience for about 50 folks from the Phoenix area are a visual collection of the hard won fruits of the area and an attractive look into the fun that is Cottonwood, AZ.

Casey Rooney, Cottonwood's Economic Development Director, said, "I am so proud of this film. I show it to everyone."

The 4½-minute YouTube promotional video is a professional edit of dozens of individual videos as the Phoenix participants wandered around the attractions and delights that the Cottonwood area has to offer.

The exposure didn't cost Cottonwood residents a dime. Wrapping Cottonwood's culture into a bite-size sample for consumers was funded by an Arizona Catalyst Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, written by Julana Brutsche of Arizona Culture and sponsored by the Old Town Center for the Arts.

Rooney believes other communities are going to want to provide such a take on their own community after seeing the video. But, Cottonwood was the first to take the leap, partnered with the Cottonwood Economic Development Council, Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce, Local First Arizona and the Old Town Association.

Locally, Rooney believes that some businesses are going to want to share in using some of the film footage, and other footage not in the video, to market their own businesses.

It is all part of the city's branding process, Rooney explained, along with the new city logo and the slogan "Cottonwood: The Heart of Arizona Wine Country"

If you listen to the city council meeting on May 6th, 2014, it's very clear that the logo is still in the development stage. It has not been completed and more work needs to be done. The logo should have not been posted in the paper prior to its completion. Casey Rooney is just doing his job as directed by the city council. Scott maybe involved in the wine industry now but he is not making the decisions, he is following the guidance he is being given. Scott was hired by the City of Cottonwood months before he was involved in the industry. Cottonwood is the heart of Arizona and therefore the heart of Arizona wine country. If you don't like the branding process then get involved!! This process has been on going for the better part of 2 years.

I think it's safe to presume Meg Williams Jamison is one of the ton. I'd even go so far as to include designer and budding winemaker Scott Havice. Without proof, however, I would not include Mayor Joens or the City Council. The fact they voted for it could be due to the old pick one or the other ploy. And Casey Rooney is definitely out. He's on record as preferring the alternate "collegiate" shield design with the tree, the river, and vineyards into the horizon. -FC

I'm just wondering if you think there is a conflict of interest in the city hiring a "design consultant" to come up with this new hideous logo, given that the consultant is also part owner of the newest in-town winery to open soon?

Not only is the city ignoring the popular consensus of residents to ditch this ugly and inappropriate logo, they engaged in a highly unethical contract to have it created. Once again the good 'ole boys network lining its own pockets.

Article comment by: I refer everyone... another story being run concurrently in the Verde Independent, titled: "Arizona Ranked in Top Five for Alcohol-Related Deaths in CDC Study"...

Will this fact impact the fast-track sweet-sell emphasis on alcohol "tasting" in Old Town for tourism one bit? Of course not. But pointing up these two stories running at the same time, knowing many will witness the sad irony (amongst so much else), is about all one can do.

But, Arizona is ranked in top five for alcohol-related deaths in CDC study!

What a great thing to brand Cottonwood with!! Maybe it is another way to bring in revenue. Get the tourists drunk or to the slightest degree, then cite them for under the influence! (all while the officer displays the wine logo on his uniform and patrol car) Great idea!!

Cottonwood has a right to re-brand, but this is not their brand. Cottonwood is not the "heart" of AZ wine country. Its a slap in the face to the REAL growers and REAL producers. Yes Kimber, we are the few. The few who actually toil, sweat and bleed for our industry. I'm glad Cottonwood is trying to make itself a more attractive destination. More power to them, but that town has no right to lay claim to AZ Wine Country. One street shared by a couple of true wineries and peppered with non-integrated tasting rooms (grow and/or produce and/or bottle or even legally label their own wine) does not "wine country" make. Those who beat the drum for sustainable industry are turning a blind eye to the fact that Cottonwood's idea to cash in on our industry is hardly sustainable. Cottonwood is not the heart of Arizona's wine country. Its offensive to all of us who truly live, breath, promote, GROW and PRODUCE ARIZONA wine. I have to remain anonymous because this isn't just about Cottonwood, this is yet another epic fail on the part of the Arizona Wine Growers Association. Rooney sits on their board and admits he knows nothing about wine. Our own organization failed us by not stopping Rooney's efforts.
I remain anon because I work in this industry and we have to work together to make the changes that will preserve the integrity of AZ wine. Surprisingly, not everyone is on board with integrity.
Wine is hard. Wine is not a get rich quick scheme.
I've got two words for Cottonwood and for the AWGA, "Santa Barbara".

If you do not agree that the new logo says "great accommodations, tasting rooms, outstanding restaurants, easy access, and walkability," then you are an "angry resident" and part of a "small minority" who denies that "change" is good.

I agree with Ms. Lanning's comments. I am a resident here and work here and believe that the new promotional materials make a statement that will benefit the region and the entire state. Cottonwood and the Verde Valley have a business community and a hard working people it should be proud to show off. I like the logo and believe the video is extremely well done and professional. The video shows the many assets that our community has to offer, not only for visitors but for residents to take advantage of too. I hope that our community can come together on this and be supportive of the process our leadership has bravely taken on in this small city.

You don't have to assume that, but you can presume it.

Just as I can presume that you're the executive director of Local First Arizona, a Phoenix non-profit promotion firm with around 40 local businesses as members, and that you have a strong interest in promoting the wine business.

Nothing wrong with that. But your connections with Havice Design, Cottonwood, and the Culture Challenge could have some influence on your defense of the logo. :-)
