COTTONWOOD --With the Verde Valley Job Fair approaching April 9, it's a good time to take another look at your personal profile. And, if it's been a while since you applied for a job, things have changed and you should be prepared.

The Verde Valley Job Fair, which will take place at the Verde Valley Fairgrounds, is an opportunity to get information on job openings and the skills needed for a position, and for some people, a new job.

Come dressed ready to impress and be prepared.

"Things are looking up," said Doris Helgeson, Employment Service Representative in the Cottonwood Job Service Office.

She says now is a good time to stop by the office to take advantage of the Arizona Job Connection computer system. You enter your job history and the system will produce a nice professional-looking resume. You will need a resume at the Job Fair to present to employers.

Employers who have signed up for the Job Fair in Cottonwood include the Arizona State Parks, Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District, City of Cottonwood, Verde Valley Medical Center, Tender Hearts Senior Care, Yavapai College among many others. The positions include caregivers, office jobs, fast food, food preparation, maintenance and day labor positions.

Construction continues to be slow but there are some jobs and a kit to help tradesmen find positions will be available. Helgeson said a Mesa remodeler was recently looking for employees in the Verde Valley.

Linda Brannock is the DES Employment Supervisor for Prescott, Prescott Valley, Cottonwood and Flagstaff. She says there are now regular construction jobs in the Prescott area with new housing starts and commercial construction. She said Tractor Supply recently filled 14 positions and resorts in Sedona are now looking to fill full-time jobs.

Helgeson stressed the importance of having a professional resume. Employers often use a key-word scanner to sort through resumes to find the best candidate for the job and the job service computers can create that profile. You may want to produce a different resume depending upon the position you are seeking, she said.

She advised seniors to brush up on their technical and computer skills.

"We are seeing more job openings," said Brannock, although "quite a few of the jobs are part-time positions."

Kitty Roberts, who works with Helgeson in Cottonwood, said, DES has been able to place about 40 people in jobs each month since January.

Helgeson said job-seekers must be persistent: "It is really a job looking for a job. You need to be really diligent."

If you have been a stay-a-home mom, Arizona Job Connection can help you catalog skills you may not recognize. Everyone does a background check now and felony convictions will give you a black mark. Sexual felonies cannot be removed, but if you had a felony a long time ago, you can apply through the court to have that record expunged through the court. Job Service can tell how to do that

DES also offers a free GED training course.

The office will soon have a full-time veterans representative. Vetraplex has opportunities for labor and construction opportunities.
