COTTONWOOD -- A complex in the Cottonwood industrial area has been permitted as a "grow" house for medical marijuana.

The Cottonwood Planning Commission Monday unanimously granted a conditional use permit for a single year for a building on Cherry Street. The cultivation operation, proposed by Zonacare will be leasing a building formerly used by Griffith Enterprises for assembly of wiring harnesses for automobiles. Griffith has moved to a new building near Camp Verde. Tom Pender now owns the property.

Zonacare has operated a medical marijuana dispensary in Sedona for a year "with no complaints."

The building is concrete block construction, and the property is surrounded by fencing topped by barbed wire. It is located in an industrial zone.

Ted Downing and Ian Pederson, who will operate the plant, say they have conferred with Cottonwood Police Commander Jody Makuch about their security plan. The entire plant will be monitored by closed circuit TV with alarms to trigger at the police department a couple blocks away as well as to the operators.

All employees must be fingerprinted, screened and cleared for entry. The property will be subject to random state inspections.

No visitor may enter the plant without prior authorization.

Downing says the building will not even have signs to indicate its use.

While the building is more than 12,000 square feet, only 10,000 square feet will be devoted to medical marijuana production. The operation will be expanded in three phases. More space will be used in the future to infuse products with the medical marijuana components.

Downing explained that people who use medical marijuana don't want to smoke a product so the medicinal components are infused into brownies, gummy bears and other products.

Residential property adjoins the plant on the north side. One neighbor said there are gates in the fencing there and suggested they should be closed. He suggested a more attractive wall in the back than barbed wire. "I don't want to look into a prison."

Pender said, "If there is a gate there today, it won't be tomorrow."

Enalo Lockard, a member of the Verde Valley Christian Church nearby, asked how the permit would be affected if the church was to open a day care center for children.

Board Chairman, Ed Kiyler said the board would have to look at it at that time.

Hemp is better for making material than cotton, and pot is a much safer alternative than alcohol. Case closed.

I've never seen anybody smoke marijuana and then want to go out and look for a fight.

Yeah, SO WHAT?

You think most people are in the pews because they really believe in a magical man in the sky or maybe because they want to cover their a$$e$ 'just in case' there really is a heaven and a being that is gonna smite us all through a world wide armegedon?

You really think the war on terror is because of these world wide terrorists who come from incredibly poor countries like Afganistan? Whose well funded and high tech idea of terrorism is to strap bombs to themselves? Or you think it might just enrich the American corporations and the war profiteers?

You think the heads of major national charities are in it to save people or for the big 6 digit paycheck?

Did you actually believe there were WMDs? Funny I thought there was OIL in them there hills. So in hindsight, who was right?

Answer me this, do you think people who are brewing their own beer and wine are paying taxes on it? Use some brain cells . . . critically think.

I wasn't born yesterday . . . but apparently you were.

Maybe I missed something? Nope, But you sure did. My statement went right over your head! The ONLY reason for pot being made legal is for the TAXES it will generate. Our present government is broke and so hard up for money it will do anything. They don't care about those innocent people killed in drug raids by the cops who went to the wrong house or folks incarcerated for smoking a joint. THEY DON'T CARE about anything you mentioned, they only care about our Tax dollars! So, go ahead and believe your lying president. If you do, your the idiot!

I Can See It Now

"I can see the Phillip Morris TV commercial's for next years Super Bowl now, a New Marlboro Man smoking his favorite bud! Menthol or Regular 100's with filters of course! That's just the start, then comes the ad's for your post pot munchies! Mark my words!"

Yeah, SO WHAT?

The only reason alcohol, tobacco and GMO's are accepted by our government is MONEY.

They also allowed asbestos, smart meters, lead gasoline and paint. They still allow dangerous drugs that you can overdose on sold over the counter like Tylenol and aspirin.

You like paying billions for a failed drug war and to incarcerate people whose only crime is they smoked a joint? What about all those innocent people killed in drug raids by the cops who went to the wrong house?

Remember Al Capone? All the violence and gun fights of that era all went away when prohibition of alcohol was repealed. Do you think cartels are a good thing?

Man are you an idiot or what?

The only reason pot is now being accepted by our government is MONEY. They are so strapped for cash they will do almost anything to rake it in from the tax dollars it will generate. After pocketing the tax profits from Colorado's pot sales you can see the dollar signs in their new cash cow's eyes growing larger and larger. I can see the Phillip Morris TV commercial's for next years Super Bowl now, a New Marlboro Man smoking his favorite bud! Menthol or Regular 100's with filters of course! That's just the start, then comes the ad's for your post pot munchies! Mark my words!

Article comment by: yep- no need for a sign now that the paper put you on the front page-

Does it meet zoning code? yes

Has it followed the same public meeting course as all other businesses? yes

Will it generate lots of page views and clicks... of course!

Another non-story... would folks rather it be grown up on the side of Mingus in national forest?

Or in your neighbors house?

My hope is that if more folks smoke marijuana, less folks will drink alcohol...which is really dangerous!

Article comment by: What's pathetic is...

...that this plant hasn't always been accessible to anyone who benefits by it, and by contrast, alcohol HAS been. Very warped and twisted reasoning involved there.

Article comment by: Far from pathetic really -

Simple free market economy capitalism at work.

Where there is a market there is a need to serve it.

Everything seems to be on the level and per relevant city codes so why this is even an issue is the real question.

The best part is that nobody is forcing you to get a card or buy anything, yet you will surely benefit from the taxes paid by those who do.

Nothing to see here but economic development and some gardening.

So everybody just keep calm and carry on...

Article comment by: Just Pathetic

What is our community coming to? Dispensary and now this? It's getting out of hand. I feel sorry for sick people, but I bet 90% of medical card holders are just faking their sickness in order to obtain cards. I see so many people who can walk and move around and go buy 31 flavors of pot. Just Pathetic
