A popular Cottonwood restaurant closed this week after operator Vladimir Costa is said to have abruptly left town.

Gunnar Hess, the general manager of 15.Quince Grill and Cantina, 747 S. Main St., said he was forced to close the restaurant Saturday night when Quince's ran out of food and supplies. Hess said he texted Costa to ask if they would open on Tuesday, and he confirmed the restaurant would be open for business.

Hess said that Costa instead packed his bags, left town and had an acquaintance inform employees Tuesday that the restaurant was closing.

Hess said that 20 employees were expecting to be paid next Monday, but that likely will not happen now.

Wednesday, a notice on the door of the restaurant stated the landlord declared a default of unpaid rent and seized the building.

Tuesday night, Cottonwood police were on hand at the restaurant to keep order while the locks were changed.

Wednesday, Cindy Chen, who owns the property, said it was a big disappointment and suggested it was bad management. Chen, who operated Cottonwood's Golden Dragon for nearly 20 years, sold that property a couple of years ago.

Chen said she already has been contacted by three parties who would like to lease the building.

Costa originally operated Quince's in Jerome, before relocating to Cottonwood in May 2013.

Not surprised at all that this low life would do such a horrible thing to his employees and leave them not only unemployed but also with out a paycheck. My wife worked for him for many years and after being so loyal to him he just fired her one day for no apparently reason. He treated his employees horribly and never did anything by the book. If he didnt like you that day you were gone. Worst part was he'd mock you in the process and dare you to take him to court. This not only happened to my wife but many other employees but apparently what goes around comes around. I just feel bad for his staff. I hope he never shows his face there again.

You wrote -I simply asked him in Russian "what time is it" He didn't seem to understand-. Of course Vlad didn't understand, he doesn't speak Russian and is not Russian. He was born in Bolivia (South American) and came to the US when he was a kid. He speaks English and Spanish. Just because his first name is Vladimir doesn't mean he's of Russian extraction or maybe somewhere way back in his lineage he is, but do most of us speak the language of our forefathers? Not many. My daughter's name is Riley and I have no Irish blood whatsoever.

He has been advertizing Quince for sale on FaceBook for months, with the most recent being last week. It is a shame he hurt his employees by not paying them. Ultimately he has destroyed his reputation in the Verde.

I've been Vlad's barber and friend since he came to town. I'm totally surprised by this. I can't believe he would just take off like this. I hope and pray he gets his personal issues worked out. I know he was very proud of his new little baby boy. I'm going to miss eating there......

When they were in Jerome, I enjoyed the food, and I hope the chef finds work with another restaurant in the area, or starts his/her own restaurant. But heard nothing but bad things from a Jerome friend about this guy and how he treated the employees. I said, if he's such a blood sucker maybe they should call him Vlad the Impaler. Then I had to explain the reference to Count Dracul, aka Vlad the Impaler. I guess folks in Jerome started using the knick name when referring to him! Don't know the guy, but running out on your employees like that really shows a lack of character. Better to explain the situation and try to make it right with the employees. Restaurant work pays so little as it is, the employees should be your first concern.

This Guy "Bladamir Jamie Costa Guerra" aka Vlad Costa is a fake! He was a line cook at Denny's in Flagstaff. He got lucky with a good branding and just frozen off the truck food.... He praised and comped people he thought had power or money, while ripping off his employees and small business owners to do so. He was ran out of Jerome and the only place available was the old Murphy's grill.... Lets hope all the innocent people of the Verde Valley get their money.

How sad. Used to love when this restaurant was in Jerome. Then recently ate there and it was strange how the menu changed, and the staff seemed helpless with the changes that were taking place. Then suddenly weekday lunch was no longer being offered. I don't recommend any new business take over this building for it seems to have a bad case of luck.

It's a shame they didn't get him before for this. This is the same thing that happened in Jerome. He probably skipped town and went back to his home town or some where else to scam some more ppl. I feel really sorry for his family and kids it's not fair to them.

Anyone who is surprised by this hasn't been paying attention. You could see this coming 6 months ago.
