Civil unions may reach fifth Arizona city
"Most of what the ordinance would grant is already in the town of Clarkdale."

Clarkdale could become the fifth city in the state to recognize contractual relationships similar to marriage, regardless of sexual orientation or gender.

Councilman Curtiss Bohall urged the council to pursue the issue, which has been added to the Oct. 8 agenda.

"It's just the right thing to do," he said. "Jerome did it, and I said to myself, why didn't we do that?"

Sedona passed its own ordinance Tuesday with a 5-2 vote. Clarkdale Mayor Doug Von Gausig said his council may decide to base its ordinance draft on Sedona or Jerome.

"Councilman Bohall felt very strongly that equality was very important in our town," Von Gausig said. "This was a good gesture that promotes that kind of equality."

Clarkdale already extends benefits to the partners in same-sex couples.

"It's certainly going to be more of a symbolic gesture, but it's a gesture of support for the LGBT community," he said. "Most of what the ordinance would grant is already in the town of Clarkdale."

In Sedona, there were two votes against the ordinance from council members Dan McIlroy and Mike Ward.

McIlroy, a born-again Christian, didn't bring his religious views into the council meetings that led to the new law's passage because they would have "fallen on deaf ears."

"I don't think civil unions are appropriate in God's sight," he said. "If the people of Clarkdale or Cottonwood or Camp Verde decide they want this, we have to honor the will of the people."

Civil unions need to be decided by a council rather than the people. Sedona is divided on many issues, and he said a council of seven shouldn't decide contentious laws.

Small pockets of Arizona are embracing civil unions, McIlroy said, but the council exists to find out what people want, and represent them accordingly.

"I don't think the people in Arizona as a state are ready for this," he said. "Let the people speak in the larger context and not just let the council decide on an issue that had moral, religious and political implications."

Ward said while supporters of an issue are more likely to show up for a meeting, some members of McIlroy's church did speak against civil unions despite being outnumbered.

Wording in the ordinance was changed from supporting "individuals' rights or ability to enter into contractual agreements or contractual relationships," to "individualsâ rights to enter into lasting and meaningful relationships," Assistant City Manager Karen Daines said during the Tuesday meeting.

Ward said he took issue with the change because the new wording was too close to marriage.

"There is a community in Sedona that has a very strong voice to make marriage between a man and a woman," he said. "I would have voted yes if a couple members of the council had not made it a marriage issue."

Sedona Mayor Rob Adams said the majority of the council was confident the ordinance was a civil union and not crossing into the territory of marriage.

The law will take effect around Oct. 23. Members of national non-profit organization PFLAG and local group Sedona Pride attended the vote to show their support.

"The room was filled with people who are supporters of this and who will probably take advantage of the opportunity to file with the city," he said.

The wording of the ordinance embodied how he and five other councilors felt.

"It reflects some of the core principles of Sedona in terms of being a community that embraces equality," Adams said.

Same-sex couples have an equal right to show their commitment to one another, he said.

"Any change is initiated at a grassroots or local level," Adams said. "So hopefully that's what we're seeing, is change."

Von Gausig said Clarkdale still has a lot of public opinion to solicit before it proceeds, and the Oct. 8 work session will be the start of the process.

"It was a brave move on the parts of Tucson, Bisbee, Jerome and Sedona," he said. "We just took a little while to get on the bandwagon, but here we are."

Your frustration is getting louder and louder. Who, other than a true narcissist, would try and tell the same joke twice? Especially one that wasn't funny to begin with.

Let's see, I can't debate the issue so I'll start calling people names! That'll sway them over to my side! Is that how it goes for you?

Reading all the 'Let us destroy marriage for society as retribution' blogs show no signs of life for your pogrom against matrimony!

That you cannot recognize a perfect analogy is just another of your deep-seated issues.

Hint Queeg was crazy.

Queeg did the same, "Hahahahaha..." that you are reduced to murmur, as if it makes any point outside your head.

Okay, maybe not as many "Ha's."

Be suspicious of the voices in your head, Mary Jane, they are making you look pretty bad...

Article comment by: @ Why are some people so concerned

The real question is Why are some people so dishonest about the issue?

Your rant is a perfect example of the narcissism of homosexuality. The truth be known, nobody cares even the slightest bit about whom you are having sex with, NOBODY!

Let's rephrase your question so that it reflects the real issue, shall we?

Why are some people so concerned with redefining marriage? Answer...To spite society for not accepting a deviant lifestyle as something to be desired and encouraged, especially among the young MTV crowd!

It's reminiscent of the 'Rodney King' trial, where they showed the beat down he took over and over and over until everyone was DE synthesized to the images.

The thing we must remember here is, homosexuality and atheism are expressions of a 'Narcissistic Personality Disorder' and this is something that is rarely curable. With that in mind, we should empathize and tolerate the behavior but never succumb to the Hollywood blackmail attempts to sanctify it.

@ Why are some people so concerned
I wonder how many people will realize how profound a question that is.

Why, indeed?

Obviously, if procreation is a person's major reason for entering a domestic relationship, then gender is of prime importance, as are all the traits needed for good parenting. But if it isn't--and with resource depletion a local and global problem, why should it be?--then why should gender limit, much less govern your choice of a life's partner?

By that token, however, given that most societal marriage conventions are practical attempts to provide a stable environment in which to rear offspring, why are some people who have no desire to procreate more concerned with gaining "marriage equality" than in reforming the legal inequities that favor conventional marriages over domestic contracts?

Gay rights groups are divided on this point, and most ecumenical councils are not as concerned with what you do with your womb as they are with their clergy being forced to perform wedding ceremonies antithetical to their doctrines. This occurred with abortion and birth control. There is no reason to assume legal beagles and government agencies will refrain from this new avenue to attack religious convictions.

Over MY sex life, MY choice of either boyfriend or a girlfriend and MY womb? Why are you so occupied as to who I date and have sex with? Gender is not important to many of us, we choose a partner not because they are male or female but because of who they are as a person.

Such logic! Such rhetoric! And you wonder why you are losing the fight to redefine America so quickly! Hahahahahahahaha...

Your responses are reminiscent of a 2 yr old who whines and stomps his feet because he can't have another cookie...Gimmee, gimmee or I'll scream and cry and call you names. Whatever you do, don't stop showing your true colors!!!! Waah...

And just one more time for Tina Vigilante. Your attempts to cloud the issue are pathetic. You are completely dishonest with yourself and everyone else and we all see right through your sophomoric rhetoric. This issue is about the Hollywood Cult of Homosexuality trying to wreak it's retribution and vengeance on society for their refusal to reclassify their abhorrent behavior as something wholesome and good. In the end, the only thing that will be remembered is the TRUTH, and that is something your side cannot abide! YOU'LL FEEL MUCH BETTER AS SOON AS YOU STOP!

What's the point of having an opinion about someone else's sex life - much less expressing it for others to read? Or having and expressing an opinion about who a stranger is in love with and who they want to marry, regardless of gender? Your opinion about a stranger's love life is totally irrelevant. You don't matter. Your opinion is worth less than dirt. Nobody likes a busybody because that is a perversion that affects everyone. Mind your own business, juveniles.

If only it was as simple as that.

I think most people are good with taking a live and let live approach. What other people do in the privacy of their own homes is their business.

Fine and dandy as far as I'm concerned. Have at it.

The problem comes with the liberal social activists who are shoving this issue down the country's throat, including first lady Michelle Obama.

For instance, do we really need the first lady plugging this at the Academy Awards announcement for best picture? Completely irrelevant and off the wall.

Do we really have to be subjected to public displays of homosexual affection?

Do we really need to showcase public gay pride events that emphasize lewd sexual perversions and blatant promiscuity, events they sponsors actually want us to believe are "family friendly"?

Modern Family isn't real my friends. It's pretend. All made up. A fantasy.

And there's this whole push to create new laws to appease the social liberals, including a redefinition of marriage.

On the other hand, you have social conservatives in Clarkdale and elsewhere who find all this offensive. They count too you know.

Conservatives don't run the show, but either do liberals.

I would hope Clarkdale doesn't feel the need to prove anything or jump on any bandwagons, unless someone is really really anxious to score some political points with liberals.

But rest assured those points will no doubt come at a steep price from conservatives.

You just never know. Sometimes people need to hear a simple, unalterable fact "just one more time" before it finally sinks in and they see the light. And then too, sometimes not. LOL But I'll give it a go, for whatever it might be worth.

I promise!

Like I say, ya never know.

@ You know Mary Jane

How much desperation does it take to resort to the kind of emotional drivel you came up with? But then again, logic isn't exactly your strong suit, is it?

But let's explain it so everyone sees exactly who is unhinged and grasping at straws. You are so bereft of logic and the art of rhetoric that you confuse disgust with repression. Wouldn't it be nice for you if everyone was as obsessed about their own genitalia as it pertains to sex. Are you really so confused about this or is it maybe you have no reasoning or logic to back up your emotionally driven obsessions? I'm thinking it's the latter.

But hey, based on your logic, you must really be a closet heterosexual. Because, based again on your convoluted logic, the only reason you engage in homosexuality is that deep down you are really a heterosexual. Yep, makes perfect sense in your world, eh?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha....Try again!

It is getting pretty obvious that it is getting harder and harder to think of things to say in reply to my comments without actually responding to them, eh?

Thank you for bringing up the word 'repressed,' in this conversation.

The only 'thing' apparently being repressed your homosexuality. It is the only possible explanation for your blatant hatred and bigotry towards the subject.

You sound so like the many politicians who publicly decry homosexuality-- they sound just like you-- but, later are found to be involved in a homosexual situation.

Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting

Article comment by: Gay rights not the same as women's rights

Another false equivalency from those pushing the gay agenda: equating so-called gay rights with women's rights.

Homosexuality simply is not the same as gender, race, skin color, national origin, or any other characteristic over which one has no control.

That's because homosexuality, and the entire the gay lifestyle, is a choice. One has control over who to love, or not love, and to think otherwise is simply nonsense.

And just because homosexuality is an immoral and perverted choice doesn't make it any less of a choice.

Plus homosexuals already have equality, and to think otherwise is nonsense. They are as protected as anyone is from discrimination based on gender, skin color, and so forth.

They already have equality with marriage. But by discriminating against an opposite sex partner, they simply choose not to use it.
