Verde Valley cracks list for Top 10 U.S. Travel Destinations

Lonely Planet is the world's leading travel publisher and holds the No. 1 spot in guidebook sales in the world.

Robert Reid, the US travel editor, announced the selection of the Verde Valley as one of the Top 10 U.S. Travel Destinations by saying, "The 714 acre region is beautiful, with green canyons, rimmed by red rocks, and towns like Cottonwood, Jerome, and Sedona that have long drawn visitors for good food, art and mining lore. But the Verde Valley is all about the wine."

The Top 10 US Destinations are 10 places in the United States that Lonely Planet thinks travelers should add to their wish lists for the coming year.

The Verde Valley has long been known for the red rock beauty between Sedona and Cottonwood, but travelers are now discovering the charm of Cottonwood and Jerome, said Reid.

He added that Cottonwood's Old Town Main Street is lined with one-of-a-kind shops, tasting rooms, locally owned dining establishments, and unique lodging.

Jerome is an authentic old mining town that clings to the mountainside overlooking the Verde Valley. Known as the "wickedest town in the west," visitors love Jerome's haunted history, shops, tasting rooms, and restaurants with local character.

Clarkdale is a gem, but was likely not specifically mentioned because they have no presence yet on the VV Wine Trail. I'm looking forward to the day that a Tasting Room opens in downtown Clarkdale! Between the opportunities in downtown and the efforts to promote the Verde River in Clarkdale, its time will soon come.

I Agree!!! You can't ask for a nicer little town than Clarkdale. To me it seems to be a close-nit and friendly community. The homes are beautiful and have that old west stlye. It surely is a gem of the Verde Valley!

What happened to mentioning Clarkdale in that list of Verde Valley gems. It also played an important part in the copper mining history and is a lovely little town.
